EU type examination

EU-type examination is the part of a conformity assessment procedure whereby a notified body examines the technical design of an appliance and verifies and attests that the technical design of the appliance meets the applicable requirements.

The type examination is carried out by assessing the adequacy of the technical design of the appliance and by checking a sample of the finished appliance.

In the technical design assessment, the notified body examines the technical documentation and supporting evidence concerning the appliance.

If the type of appliance meets the requirements of the Regulation, the notified body will issue an EU-type examination certificate to the manufacturer.

The stages of the type examination are explained in more detail in section 1 of Annex III to the Gas Appliances Regulation.

In practice, the type examination procedure most commonly means that the notified body chosen by the manufacturer examines the documentation concerning product design and the material choices, ensuring that they meet the requirements of the Regulation. The laboratory of the notified body will then carry out physical and mechanical tests on the product to ensure that it meets the requirements of the Regulation. The notified body will also examine the warning labels on the product, as well as the installation, operation and maintenance instructions, to ensure that the product also complies with the requirements of the Regulation in use.

An EU-type examination certificate is valid for a maximum of 10 years from the date of issue.
